Give Law Firms Matter Handoff Memory That Protects Every Client and Position
Small law firm matter handoffs are high-risk moments. Context that doesn't transfer becomes errors that harm clients. MemoryLake gives small law firms structured matter handoff memory — every position, prior filing, and strategic decision preserved.

The problem: small firm matter handoffs lose risk-bearing context
A senior associate leaves the firm. The matters they handled transfer to other lawyers. The strategic context — why this position, why this approach, what the opposing counsel does — lives in their head and walks out with them.

One project per matter keeps the privilege wall: searching the matter being handed over returns nothing from any other matter. But notes about opposing counsel live on his actor, shared across matters, and the handoff read loads the matter plus his patterns in one union search. Three of the other matter's secrets come with it: the confidential settlement amount, the client's settlement authority, a gap in its evidence. A wall check finds them; moving them back to their own matter fixes the source.
What you will see
- Each matter is a project; the recurring opposing counsel is an actor. Every record is one fact, word for word, with
fact add;fact update --metadatalabels where it came from (matter) and whether it is a portable pattern or matter-specific (scope) - The handoff read is
search --projects <matter> --actors <counsel>, the union of the two. The control, the matter project alone, has 0 names or figures from the other matter; the union brings back 3 of the other matter's facts, its settlement amount at #1 for the mediation-prep question - The wall check reads every fact on the shared actor with
fact list, by label plus a scan for other matters' names and figures: 4 portable patterns, 1 for this matter, 3 withheld. One note had no label; only the scan catches it - Each withheld fact is pinned word for word on its own matter's project and deleted from the actor: the handoff keeps the counsel's patterns with 0 names from the other matter, which still answers for itself. Plus a local web UI
